"Lieutenant...sorry I'm late, but I'm glad to see you've started looking around. What have you seen so far, any questions?" asked Matrix "Sir, you never need to apologize to me. You are my superior. I'm suppose to apologize to be six minutes too early." he said. He knew saying it wouldn't change the way his superior would see the relation with him, but it could nevertheless gives him perspective on what Gan was used to on his homeworld. "I do have lot of questions sir. How is the stealth technology working? What is the materials used for the ship hull and plating? What kind of weapon do you have. Everything. She seems such a nice ship!". She did was a nice ship. He was thinking how much he would like to have that kind of ships to fight Central Command. "She's a fine ship, that's for sure. The only one in the fleet with spiral drive. We've also made a number of field modifications in the last few missions. As you probably have noticed she took a beating in our last mission...the repairs will be extensive and I've been told that the yard master and Fleet will consider some additions and upgrades while she's here. All that will depend on Star Fleet of course. Nolar listened attentively. "I've noticed. Even more intriguing. The missions she is assigned to must be quite interesting I am sure. So, sir, how is this technology working?" "Shall we?" asked Matrix The joy on Gan faces could barely get unnoticed. He followed Matrix. There was so much to learn about this ship. So much new technologies. After all, the USS Rosenante was a far better affectation than he could have expected. His luck was shining. (Reply Matrix) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Rosenante, Deflector Control - 3O/CEO-LCDR Steven Matrix, 1509) "I've noticed. Even more intriguing. The missions she is assigned to must be quite interesting I am sure. So, sir, how is this technology working?" asked Nolar. "Shall we?" asked Matrix as he walked slightly ahead of the new ACEO. "The spiral drive has been used on many missions and we've used it to amplify energy reserves or augment energy requirements as needed. Of course the spiral drive has been used for propulsion as well. Unofficially we've managed above warp 9.998 although theoretically we can't exceed 9.9975." Matrix continued, "We have added refinements to deflector control as well. Navigation systems have been improved to the point were we can more accurately predict warp to sub-warp entry into a star system, or even directly enter a planetary orbit if needed. A very risky maneuver, but we can do it should the Captain or FO require it." "Any questions so far?" asked Matrix. (Reply Nolar) "There are probably too many systems to mention that we haven't upgraded in some fashion. I would say the majority of our improvements have come largely in the form of new programing and procedures. When we get an opportunity to test in the field we do our best. As you probably know we do a lot of ad hoc modifications to fit mission needs, emergencies that sort of thing. Those modifications that might benefit other ships present or future we submit to Fleet for review." replied Matrix. (Reply Nolar) "What would you like to see next?" asked Matrix. Such a handsome face and a really cute butt!" Marah giggled. Ben's face turned red. Sanok showed no reaction. "Marah would you check us in? I need to talk to Sanok." "Sure. See you on board." Marah kissed Ben on the cheek and headed off. Ben turned to face Sanok, his face a mixture of emotions. "Sanok, I...." "Do not worry," said Sanok. "I will insure that all the reports are completed and all personnel are settled. Enjoy your visit with your parents. I will see you when you return." "That's what I wanted to talk to you about," said Ben. Sanok could see that Ben was having a difficult time with what he had to say. "There's a chance I won't be coming back." "I see." Sanok did not want this to happen, of course, but he understood why Ben might be inclined to make that decision. His parents had been assimilated by the Borg and lost to him for years. On the Tkon sphere mission, his parents were amongst the drones fighting against them. Through heroic means, Ben's parents had been rescued and returned to him. Ben also had Marah in his life and they were engaged to be married. Ben deserved the happiness a family would give him. Sanok would miss his friend, but he also wanted the best for him. "I'm taking an extended leave, Sanok. I'm officially listed with Starfleet as inactive." "You must do what is best for yourself, for Marah, and for your parents." "I know, but...." "I once told you to leave Starfleet to be with Marah," said Sanok. "If that is what is best, you must do it." "The needs of the many. Right, Sanok?" "Yes." There was an awkward silence. "Ben, you are one of Starfleet's best. You have done more than your fair share in your time of service. If this is what you must do, then do it. Enjoy your life and the love you now have." Ben nodded. "You make sure you come to Earth for a visit." "Indeed. I am still the best man for your wedding." Ben laughed. "And you've got to dance with Marah." "Yes." There was another pause. "Ben, you have been and always shall be, my friend." He held up his hand in the traditional Vulcan gesture. "Live long and prosper." With a smile on his face, Ben touched Sanok on the arm. Nodding, he headed off after Marah. With an inward sigh, Sanok stood and watched, until he could no longer see his friend in the crowd. The Sarahia system was an oddity, the closest plant all desert, the second beaches, the third jungle and the last-artic. The Transport had only one other passenger; another reason for selecting it. He waited for him or her. Standing uncharacteristically lazy aganist the space station structure. Booking a lounge for a few hours, he sat staring out the window, contemplating the future, his part in it, and what he should do. Sanok had told Ben that he understood the decision to take an extended leave to be with Marah and his family. He had even encouraged it, though very deep down, he didn't want Ben to leave. Still, if not returning was what made Ben happy, and it fulfilled him to the utmost, then it was the best path for his friend to take. The cycle of life was that things always progressed and changed. Nothing ever stayed the same or lasted forever. People came into your life, and most passed through, never to be seen again. If one was fortunate, one had people in one's life that enhanced it and made it worth living. That's what Ben Soma had done for Sanok. They were both still young and had so much more to do together. Sanok did not want it to end so soon. Yet that was the cycle of life. Sighing outwardly and not caring that he was allowing his emotions to manifest, Sanok tapped his comm badge. He studied them for a moment, and could see concern on Jackson's face, "Thank you for coming. I will get right to what I have to say." Sanok paused for a moment. Internally, he was having difficulty suppressing his emotions, which irritated him. This being an emotional reaction, it irritated him more. It was a cycle that was most disagreeable to him. Outwardly, he maintained the typical, blank Vulcan expression. "As you know, Ben... Captain Soma, has gone to Earth with Marah Neru to visit his parents. What you do not know, is he told me there was a chance he would not be returning." Sanok paused again. "Captain Soma has taken an extended leave and is listed with Starfleet as inactive. Initially, I thought this was not an issue, as the Rose is being repaired, and Ben would surely return." Sanok didn't correct himself for using his friend's name, instead of his formal rank. "Starfleet Command has a different opinion on this matter. It seems they cannot have their starships without captains, even for a period of repair and shore leave. Effective now, I am the captain and commanding officer of the USS Rosenante." Sanok could see that neither Jackson nor Matrix expected this. "Mister Matrix, command has named you as the new FO. You will also remain as chief engineer, but you will train Lieutenant Nolar to eventually take that position. I expect you will properly prepare him." Sanok looked at Jackson. "You will continue your duties as 2O. Also, since Lieutenant Raschen is on extended leave as well, and his future status is unclear, I am assigning you as the new chief of security." Sanok had held this position, and did not want to relinquish it. He had to do so, of course, which was another reason this entire situation was not agreeable to him at all. Matrix hadn't time to process what the circumstances were, but he respected Soma a great deal and felt whatever decision he made it was in his and the Rose's best interest. The other issue Matrix was faced with was he had just been promoted above Tom...his closed friend. He was more worried about how Tom would take it and how their personal relationship would evolve. Steve was not the egotistical type and would work with anyone but this was awkward to say the least. He hoped their long friendship would work through this. Still he felt Tom's disappointment within those few moments. Matrix stood still trying to absorb what Sanok just told the both of them. The Rose would not be the same without Soma, but he respected Sanok as well. "Your predecessor set a very high standard, so you have your work cut out for you," said Sanok. There was a final pause. Dahlia knew their was more and after a moment asked "what else Thomas?". After a moment Tom took a breath and began his explanation. "I was passed over for first officer due to my illustrious stepdad's Medling. Steve matrix is the new first officer. Capt. Sanok has asked me to switch from operations to chief of security and remain as second officer" Tom concluded. Tom couldn't help himself and his tears flowed freely. Dahlia's heart ached for Tom. He would yet be a First Officer she knew. " I stayed on as it appears SF command views me as a loser never to be given a chance. I have no where else to go" Tom mumbled . Dahlia wanted to soothe her husband. She Struggled to find the words to comfort her man. "Sanok Must believe you to be the best choice for security Thomas.. I believe he will work with you to overcome this setback." She said hugging her love . It was already almost 2000 hours when he'd spotted the shop, and though he'd known he was already late reporting in, he disliked feeling disheveled more than he cared about tardiness. He turned now to examine his reflection in the glass of the storefront. Paul's new medical uniform looked foreign to him. ~Assistant CMO,~ he repeated to himself. ~I never imagined.~ His jaw tensed as he brushed a stray hair behind a pointed ear and considered the barber's work with some seriousness. He frowned back at himself. ~It'll do.~ He turned and fell into a steady pace as he walked the station, referring occasionally to a PADD he'd used to map a route to his meeting with the Rosenante's 2O. Paul couldn't help wondering what he was doing here. He loved Earth. He loved being on the ground. What was he doing out here on a starbase? Why didn't he stay teaching at Iqbal another few years? And Orlean was still pressuring him to tour again. Truth was, though, that as much as Paul loved music, something was missing in that life. The PADD signaled with a chirp as Paul reached his destination. A familiar anxiety began to flood through him and with practiced concentration he numbed himself to it. His face took on a blank expression as he pressed the door chime. (reply Jackson) "Ensign jg Paul Scudder, Assistant CMO reporting in, sir." (Reply: Matrix IYW) (Ousted by: Bill West) ----- (SB Geneva, Observation Deck, Captain Sanok, Day 1, 2039) It was two hours after being informed that he was now the captain and commanding officer of the Rosenante, and Sanok was in the main observation deck, staring out the window at the ship as it lay dormant in space dock. Many thoughts had passed through his mind, from wondering what lay ahead for them, to how the crew would react, to if Ben was ever going to come back. He had also wondered if being captain was what he really wanted to do at this stage in his career. He had seen what it had done to Ben. It wasn't that Ben didn't want command one day, but years down the road. There were still so many years to serve, to be in the middle of the mission and the action. It wasn't the same for Vulcans, but Sanok understood. Was he truly ready to sit in the center seat, while others participated in the missions? Ultimately, Sanok would serve where Starfleet needed him, and he would do his best. The observation area was large and filled with people. Despite and activity and the noise, Sanok heard someone hurrying towards him. A short figure stopped next to him, looking out at the Rose. "I bet you never get tired of looking at it. You don't often see it from this view, eh?" "The Rosenante is efficiently designed. It serves its purpose with that efficiency." The new arrival snorted. "What is it that you want, Bral?" "I came to congratulate you." "I did nothing worthy of congratulations." Bral snorted again. "Being named as captain of a starship, especially one like the Rosenante, is no small matter. Even a Vulcan realizes that." "Perhaps, but a Vulcan also wonders how you know this." Bral shrugged. "I have connections. Information is always useful for something." "I trust you will allow me to inform the crew myself?" Bral laughed. "A Vulcan with a sense of humor. I always liked you, Sanok." The two men became silent, neither taking his eyes off the Rose. After a full minute, Bral spoke again. "I see you haven't left for Axtis III." "No, I have not." "The information I gave you is legitimate. You really do have a chance to find Klagth." "I know." "But...?" "Circumstances do not permit me to go off on a search and rescue mission at this time. Klagth will need to survive a little longer on his own." "I kind of figured that. You know, if you're interested, I can put a team together myself and look for him." "Out of the kindness of your heart?" "If that will help, but also for a price, of course. There are expenses in a venture like that." "Expenses I will pay, no doubt." "It's not like you're spending your Federation credits on anything else." "I will consider your offer, Bral." "You know, since you're the man in charge now, it wouldn't take much for you to find your starship near Axtis III in the near future...." Bral's voice trailed off. "Indeed." Sanok hadn't considered that. It also occurred to him that Bral had just given him free advice. He must be up to something. The two became silent again. After another minute, Bral turned away from the window. "I've got to be going. There's always a deal to be done and profit to be made. Be safe out there, Sanok." "Thank you, Bral. I will endeavor to do that." "Oh, and I'm sorry about your Hewmon friend. I really am." Sanok looked at Bral and studied his face for a moment. He could see that the Ferengi was sincere. He nodded. Bral nodded back and turned away, heading off into the crowd. When Sanok couldn't see the Ferengi anymore, he turned back to looking at the Rose, his mind back to pondering what was yet to come. He had several PADDs with him, but he simply stared off, not looking at the information on the PADDs before him. He was thinking about recent events. Captain Soma's departure was unexpected and would be felt by every member of the Rose. Matrix was concerned about how the crew would react to the change in the command crew as well. Tom Jackson was his best friend and was understandably disappointed at the promotion sequence. Matrix was troubled by the circumstances, but he was a professional as was everyone aboard the Rosenante. Matrix decided to do whatever it took to transition the crew into the new command structure. Captain Sanok was highly respected and Matrix was honored to be working as his first officer. The green PADD beeped. Matrix slid the unit back within eye sight. (Reply: None) (Posted by; Bill West) ----- (SB Geneva, Temporary Quarters, Captain Sanok, Day 1, 2315) After looking at the Rose and pondering the future, Sanok spent some time roaming the base promenade. He wasn't really going anywhere or looking for anything in particular, he was just walking. Humans said it sometimes helped a person when they were troubled about something. He had experienced that earlier in his life when he was living with his emotions, but since returning to traditional Vulcan ways, he had not participated in such things. Oddly, he had found that it helped a little. The day was ending, and Sanok was now in his temporary quarters. He had eaten a small bowl of fruit, washed up, and changed into his meditation robes. Over the past few years, that was what helped him most. Lighting a candle, he closed his eyes and began. After a few minutes, he opened them with a sigh. Two things were weighing heavily on him. The first was Ben, of course. The second was Ensign Signos. When Sanok had discerned what Signos truly was, he had gone to Captain Salid. It turned out that Salid already knew the full story, so he filled in Sanok on the details he didn't have. Sanok had insisted that Signos be put off the ship, as she was too unpredictable, a target for Section 31, and thus a danger to the ship and crew. Salid agreed that those things were possible, but since Signos was a member of his crew, he said she would stay. She deserved his loyalty and protection, just as any other member of the crew. Sanok accepted this out of respect to Salid. When Ben became captain, Sanok told him all about Signos and his recommendation that she be put off the Rose. Ben also agreed there was the possibility of danger, but he chose to keep Signos, following Salid's example. Now, Sanok was commanding officer, and he had the means to do what he had always wanted., what he had felt was best for the ship and the crew as a whole. The thing was, he had to act like a captain and not as a chief of security. The circumstances were the same, but he was not. Sending Signos away would resolve certain matters locally, and in the short term, but what about the bigger picture? What about the future? If Section 31 were about to capture Signos, what damage could they do? As much as it was disagreeable to him, logic dictated that he keep Signos on board. He could watch her, and he could act if Section 31 made a move. Only a few hours as captain, and he was already making decisions that would affect many lives. Sanok closed his eyes again and went back to his meditation. It was a struggle at first, but over the next few hours, he prevailed, overcoming his distress. For today. (reply none) (posted by Bob B.)
